Winter Session of High School Orientation Program a Big Success!
• January 27, 2012
On Friday, January 27, YPLS concluded its three-week winter session of the High School Orientation program with a trip to MacArthur Bowling. It was a fun way to say goodbye to all of the students who are moving on to high school in February. Over the course of the program, students received instruction in writing and research skills, listening, speaking, and presentation skills, and math and science as well as receiving a thorough orientation to life in Canada, Ottawa, and the OCDSB.

YPLS Students Get a Taste of High School
• December 8, 2011

Two recent visits to OCDSB high schools have the students at YPLS excited about beginning their own high school careers in February, 2012.
On Thursday, December 1, Peter, Allen, Louis, Louie, Michelle, and Haiyu spent the day at Gloucester high school where they participated in classes and met with guidance counselor, Ms. Turner to discuss their plans for the upcoming second semester. Each of the students came back to YPLS on Friday with a lot of enthusiasm about their experience at Gloucester. Many thanks to Ms. Turner and the students who generously volunteered to guide the visitors from YPLS.
Glebe high school warmly welcomed all 24 YPLS students on Monday, December 5. Half of our students spent the morning at Glebe and the other half went to Glebe after lunch. Thanks to the efforts of Ms. Crombach, Ms. Bolotenko and the students at Glebe, the day went extremely well. Special thanks go out to OCENET’s Ross Liang for making all of the necessary arrangements for the visit to Glebe.
We hope that the enthusiasm inspired by these recent high school visits help our students focus on doing their best at YPLS until it’s time to move on in February.
Successful Completion to Summer High School Foundation Program
• August 12, 2011
YPLS celebrated the end to the summer session of the High School Foundation program on Friday, August 12. Students from each class presented examples of the projects they worked on during the summer session. The students from the 2A class shared their hometown comparison chart and posters, students from the 3A class shared their biographical research assignment and debate on natural disasters, and the students from 3B presented their class newspaper. Judging from the examples shared, a lot of fantastic learning occurred in July and August at YPLS.
Also, students shared some of their talents during the ceremony. Zaki (3A) demonstrated his skill in traditional Chinese Kung Fu Tai Chi. The students from the 3B class performed an excellent dramatic skit that highlighted some of the challenges faced within first-generation immigrant families, and the students from the 2A and 3A classes performed an energetic and upbeat dance routine to end the ceremony.

YPLS Students Preparing to Enter Ottawa High Schools
• August 8, 2011
Young People's Language School students are working hard as they prepare to move on to Ottawa high schools at the beginning of September. Lessons and after-school learning has been more sharply focused on helping our students make successful transitions into Canadian secondary schools. Our teachers are teaching a course designed specifically to prepare students for the expectations and routines of OCDSB high schools and a Math Skills for High School course. Ms. Fair Rapsey is focusing on Writing and Research skills while Ms. Judy Schaber is teaching Reading, Listening, and Presentation Skills for high school.
We wish all of our students well in their upcoming high school assessments.
Goodbye Ms. Notice and Welcome Ms. Bowman
• June 24, 2011
On June 24, 2011, YPLS said “goodbye” to school administrator Cheri Notice. Ms. Notice had been at YPLS since 2007 and will be greatly missed by both colleagues and students alike. We wish Ms. Notice all the best as she returns to school this month to complete a Master’s degree in Education.
YPLS is very excited to welcome Ms. Insook Bowman to our team as our school’s new administrator. Ms. Bowman is an experienced teacher, having been an elementary English and music teacher in South Korea for 12 years. Since joining our staff on June 20, Ms. Bowman has quickly established herself as capable, professional, and hard-working. We are grateful to have Ms. Bowman at YPLS!
